How to Use Tor As a Socks5 Proxy

The Onion Router – TOR – is open-source software that enables untraceable communication on the internet. It hides the internet traffic and protects the personal information of its users keeping it completely anonymous. It maintains the user’s privacy and capability to manage confidential communication by keeping their internet activities unsupervised.

A proxy server is basically the intermediary computer between the sender and receiver. It provides security by hiding the actual IP address of a server and it can encrypt the data, so it is unreadable in transit and block access to certain web pages based on IP address.

Socks5 proxy aims to be a broader proxy for arbitrary forms of connection. The advantages of Socks5 compared to other proxies are the fact that anything can be fitted to work with it. Apart from this, it has huge popularity and works well with high-volume traffic.

Tor alone provides sufficient protection and anonymity on the network, but for those who wish to add an extra layer of protection, there is the possibility of using it as a proxy. In this article, you will find a simple and complete guide on how to use Tor as a Socks5 proxy.

  1. Download the latest version of Tor from Tor’s website. Extract the files to a place where you are going to have easy access to them, like to a folder on the Desktop.

9. Keep the Tor Browser open during all the process, if it is closed at any time the connection will close.

10. As a matter of example for this guide, we will be using the HexChat IRC client. To find an IRC server, simply search on a directory website and you will find plenty of options.

11. Open up HexChat or any IRC client and get to the settings and/or preferences area. From that menu, you will need to get to the “Networking” and/or “Proxy” section.

12. From this menu, enter the proxy settings for the connection. For this tutorial example, the “Hostname” will need to be “127.0.0.1” or “localhost”. Either one will work. The “Port” will need to be set to “9150”. The “Type” will be set to “Socks5”.

13. Finally, “Use proxy for” will need to be set to “All Connections”. Breaking this down, the IRC client connects via the Socks5 proxy at 127.0.0.1 on port 9150 to the IRC server over all the IRC connections, so all the connections will be encrypted.

14. Click on the [OK] button.

You are now connected to an IRC server via Tor with the full encryption benefits of the privacy that Tor provides. Now that it is installed and set up, it can be used on pretty much anything that allows a proxy connection such as Firefox, Chrome, Pidgin, FTP connections, PuTTY, etc.
