Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the popular darknet marketplace “Silk Road“, is currently trending again after the recent announcement to sell a minted NFT. The sales will go to a charity dedicated to relieving the suffering of the incarcerated and their families, as well as towards the #FreeRoss fund.

“With this NFT, I see a chance to make a difference…My own future may look bleak, but I can still do a little something to heal the damage I see all around me.”Ulbricht claims.

The NFT will be known as the Ross Ulbricht Genesis collection.

The NFT was first mentioned back in October on Ross’s Twitter account, which is currently run by a close friend of his.

The NFT auction plans to help #FreeRoss.org

Currently, Ross is serving a life sentence in prison on multiple charges including money laundering, sale of illegal narcotics, and conspiracy to commit computer hacking.

In 2011, at the age of 27, Ross uploaded the “Silk Road” website, a darknet marketplace. The website quickly grew to stardom as the number one marketplace to buy and sell illegal drugs, weapons, and other illegal sales or services. The website is now defunct, set forth a large step to the modern age.

Bitcoin was the only form of payment used on the Silk Road platform. The Silk Road marketplace is said to have kickstarted the Bitcoin era, as it was one of the first marketplaces that mainstreamed the cryptocurrency. Many view Ross as the reason behind the modern blockchain adoption.

Ross was caught and trialed in late 2013, the verdict was double life plus a 40-year sentence held without bail. The #FreeRoss Organization was created in hopes to bring awareness to Ross’s trial as they do not believe his sentence was a fair trial to the situation. They claim that his case and story were misleading in the case and that his trial needs rethinking.

“A first-time offender, Ross is condemned to die in prison for his role in an e-commerce website called Silk Road. His trial charges were nonviolent, and he was never prosecuted for causing harm or bodily injury.” – FreeRoss.org

Donor-Advised Charity “Art4Giving”

“With proceeds from this NFT, we are starting a donor-advised fund called Art4Giving, dedicated to relieving the suffering of the incarcerated and their families. There is a lot we can do, but one idea I am committed to is to help kids travel to visit their moms and dads in prison.” Ross Ulbricht explains.

Ross found himself looking for a new purpose as he started his 9th year in prison. With questions like “why am I here” and “What good can I do with the time I have left?” During the contemplation, the idea sparked with Ross that he could use his influence to make a difference to others.

Ross has always had a passion for art, and while in prison, his passion expanded. A close friend said to him “You should sell your art as an NFT.” The two worked together on the idea and an NFT was born.

“With this NFT, I see a chance to make a difference where it counts.

Art as a story

Ross used this moment as an opportunity to tell the story of his life. Each photo has an inscription with it that is written by Ross. The NFT comes with a 2 minute and 40-seconds short animation.

Unlike most NFTs, there will also be an animation included, the original animation made by Levitate has a voiceover by Ross. The animation is about Ross and his experience of his prison life.

The auction is available for anyone to participate in and starts at just $1. The NFT is to be delivered in Kanon’s KSPEC protocol in full quality.

Selling art in a form of an NFT has become popular in recent years. in August 2021, pop culture artist Banksy sold his art in a minted NFT for over $150 000.
