VeraCrypt is an open source encryption software that helps you encrypt whole or part of your disk drives to protect valuable information. It is super easy to use VeraCrypt – all you have to do is download, install, and follow a few simple steps to get started.

This tutorial is designed to help you download and install VeraCrypt and also to give you a few simple steps on its usage so that you can get started encrypting your storage devices.

Download & Install VeraCrypt

To get started, you need to get your hands on the software first. Here is a link to download VeraCrypt. Follow the link, select the version that works for you, and click the download button. 

Once downloaded, open the directory where you downloaded the file and extract the tar.gz file before you can use it. 

Once extracted, it is super easy to run the file. Just open up the command prompt and run the following line of code to run the file: sh veracrypt-1.0f.1-setup.tar.gz

You can also simply double click the file to run it.

How to Use VeraCrypt Effectively 

Now that we have successfully installed VeraCrypt, lets go through it to grasp the basics. 

You’ve already extracted and opened up the program. You should now enter 1 and press the enter key when prompted about accepting the user agreement. 

And there you go, VeraCrypt is installed, configured, and ready to use. Now you should see the program in your menu.

Note: If you don’t see the program in your menu, you can run it by entering VeraCrypt in the command line.

Once you run the program, the main window should appear (Picture below). Just click the “Create Volume” button to get started.

On the next page, you should select the option that says “Create a volume within a partition / drive” and then click the “next” button.

To create a normal volume, select the “Standard VeraCrypt volume” on the next window. Once you have made your selection, click the next button again.

Note: This tutorial only covers the standard VeraCrypt volume creation and doesn’t include the Hidden VeraCrypt volume creation.

Now comes the part where you need to select which storage device you want to encrypt. At this point, you should have a USB drive plugged into your computer. Select the external USB drive on the next screen and click on the next button.

Caution: Please ensure at this point that you are using a USB drive that DOES NOT have any data on it. All the data on your device will be erased when you try to encrypt it.

On the next screen, make sure that the option that says “Never save history” is selected.

The setup will then ask you to select the Encryption algorithm and the Hash algorithm. 

You have plenty of options here between AES, Serpent, and Twofish. If you know what you’re doing, select any algorithm you want. However, if you don’t understand algorithms that well, it’s recommended that you leave these options set at default.

You see? We’re getting close to completing the encryption process. On the next screen, you will be asked to set a strong password. Your password needs to be between 40 to 60 characters. 

You can also use several different characters to ensure that your password can never be guessed.

Now the setup will ask you to choose a file system. Leave this option as default because the default file system (FAT) is readable in all major operating systems.

After reaching the Volume Format screen, move your mouse cursor around for at least 30 times to generate some random data. If this seems boring to you, plug in a tablet and draw whatever you want on the screen. 

Hit the format button once you have generated enough random data.

Almost all your work is finished by this point. All you need to do now is wait patiently for the process to finish itself.

You will get a prompt notification when the setup has completed processing.

Click the “OK” button once the setup has finished processing. Exit the wizard and move onto the next step. 

Choose one of the slots and click “select drive” at the bottom to choose the storage device you just formatted.

Click the mount button now. Here you will need to type in the password that you just created, and also the admin password you set earlier for VeraCrypt. When everything is done, you will see the results in your file manager.

That is it, USB device encryption is complete. Your data is securely stored on your external USB, so in case you get arrested, no one is going to be able to find your data anytime soon!
